I thought the background fabric looked kinda like a fence, so I appliqued tulips in front of the fence. DH doesn't get it, hope you do.





I guess I should have used darker fabric around the center square, but I think it still looks ok

Yes it's a "sparkly" dark purple. On the picture it doesn't show its true color. It's more darker.
