As many as you feel comfortable with. Be sure to read through the tips as this one has a bit of a challenge to it. The sewing is easy though, the getting the fabrics in the right place takes some focus.

Congratulations on the new machine. Still trying to figure mine out

The question has been raised if you can use white background with a small green print. Yes, if this is what you have then as long as it doesn't take away from the block that is fine. I don't want people to not be able to participate due to a choice of fabric. If the blocks are spread out throughout the quilt it will look fine.
