Ok Don't laugh at me as I have never been in a swap before.

Do you have to buy F/G or can you buy that fabric and cut it into F/G???

CoalMinerWife, you can buy yardage and cut it into fat quarters. When I was in my first FQ swap I had to ask instructions how to cut a FQ! If you have any questions feel free to ask and we'll be glad to help you all we can.

OK GP - I'm asking. How much fabric do I need to buy to cut a fat quarter?

You need a half yard of fabric to cut 2 FQ's.

To cut 20 fat quarters you need 5 yards of fabric. I don't know how everyone else cuts theirs, but this is how I do it. Fold fabric selvage to selvage and lay the selvage on your cutting mat closest to you. Square up the left side and then cut fabric at 18" and at 36". Then cut just a sliver from the top folded edge to make (4) fat quarters that measure approx. 18"x20". The exact size of the FQ will depend on how wide your fabric is.
