Another mystery quilt for you to ID

Post by billizzy » Thu Jun 27, 2013 9:28 am

Ok as I was cleaning storage room came across this: A quilt a dear friend of mine who passed away several years ago was working on. Her daughter brought it to my work one day and said I could have it. Oh my its a quilt as you go or something like that I really dont know it is backing, batting sewed together all the white in pic and then these pieces have been sewed on to top. I have a bag of these pieces too. So now what do I do? Its been in this bag for 8 yrs now.

WOW what a quilt. I have no clue what the name of it is. I would probably ask the Daughter to look through her Mom's things and see if she can find the pattern.
Another reason to keep all the pieces of an ongoing project in a bag.
What I would do is air it out first. You say all the pieces are in the bag. Are they sewn together like the others? If so then you lay out the backing and batting flat and pin the next row on. Sew and flip. Repeat. I would probably lay out the rows and number them so as not to make a goof.
This from a Pal who has never done a quilt as you go so hopefully there are others who will be able to help you more.
Congrats on a beautiful quilt. Prayers for your quilting friends daughter. It must still be hard on her with all the memories.
HUGE HUGS!!!

I have all her moms stuff. SHe use to own a ceramic shop. When my dh and I got married we rented house down from shop. She had a clay wheel and my dh throws pots so we would walk down there I do ceramics and he would throw pots. she loved it. She had a stroke and then 6t months later had masive stroke and passed. they liquidated all her stuff at yard sale I bought up all fabric patterns and quilt stuff kicking myself for not gettin quilt racks but at time didnt have a place for them. no pattern. nope not sewn in bag either just cut and in there. they were probably laid out and dtrs just bagged it all. She was in her 70's when I first met her and was 88 when passed. Ii have bins of fabric; boarders and such. Some kinda thin so our ladies group uses borders for our grad quilts that we tie.

there is a line to stop at for diagonal set but that is it on the fabric. If I do finish I think I will only do the top portion. Bottom back has yellowed like got wet once. It would be nice throw. It is really thick too. Be nice in winter in my basement:)

That is a very interesting quilt. I would love to see it in person. It doesn't look or sound like it's a quilt as you go to me, but I could be wrong. The way I understand what you wrote is that the batting and backing are together, and the top is sewn onto part of it. Is that correct???

Wow, Izzy! What a mystery!!! It looks like Seminole piecing using strips, but I've never seen it used all over a quilt like that. Beats me! Thanks for showing it to us. Hopefully someone will remember seeing it somewhere...

Did your DH get to obtain the potter's wheel? I used to throw pots, too. I had a wheel once but gave it up when I was getting really painful carpal tunnel symptoms. I'd love to see some of your DH's pots!

Main--Yes the 3 layers are basted together; white fabric I think is a sheet. Then the pieces look to be sewn together and sewn right onto the layers. I too wish you all could see it up close and in person Its back in bag and in storage room once again until I can figure out how to put together.

Miriam yes he got potters wheel and has room in shop he throws and her to Kilns to fire. Cant quite get them set right pots are exploding. Says it runs too hot. no books with them so I need to research online for him. He does it in winter when not so hot down there. He has heat/air in room but prefers to work on them in fall/ early winter when temps are not too low.
