My first quilt was Eleanor's Trip Around the World. Made one for each of my children. They loved them, and I loved making them.

In the early seventies it was a nine patch set with sashings, made with cardboard templets to mark out the squares. LOL! This was way before rotary cutters came on the scene.
Then it was two denim twin quilts for my boys. Done with long strips sewn together with some added boy prints. All tied of course.
Then when el's book came out with the log cabin in a day I felt like I was so liberated being able to tear those strips!I did it up into baby pinks and blues.

My 1st quilt was underground railroad. I wanted to learn a lot of different blocks. It took me about 7-8 hours a day to make 1 block. I "unsewed" a awful lot then. I even did stitch in the ditch quilting. Didn't come out to bad and it was in the quilt show under "1st time quilts" I felt like I won the lottery, the quilters were offering sweet remarks to the group of us. They were so welcoming. I try to "pay it forward" to anyone I know is new.

It is so funny to get nostalgic about our first quilt, but we put SO MUCH LOVE IN THEM. Mine was Log Cabin - Eleanor Burns book as well.

A bit of a story goes with my first quilt.
Early 80’s, I was looking for a better paying job, but had not been called back on any resumes. A bit depressed on a Saturday morning watching the news, and all of sudden Eleanor’s Quilt in a Day show starts. Her cheery voice and her instructions for the Log Cabin pattern were so fun to watch. So I got my car keys, went to House of Fabrics, (now Joanns), and the lady helped me choose the fabric, and showed me the book. She said there is a class starting Tuesday and Thursday nights this coming week, maybe I should sign up. I did. There was 3 of us, one younger lady and one older lady. We had so much fun. After the first “lesson” we did most of our sewing at home and visited, laughed and looked at fabric mostly. The next week I got an interview with the Elementary School District for school secretary. I went, and the “older” lady from class was the Human Resource head. When I walked in, our eyes locked, and we both just looked away from each other, understanding each other. I got the job (for 19 years), and she told me she didn’t vote, left it to the other secretaries, to be fair, that did the interview.

If you get a strong impulse to do something spur of the moment……do it! It could be the best thing that could happen for you! :D
