What is a cheaper alternative to quilter's plastic?

You can also use plastic canvas from Hobby Lobby used for needle work. It makes a great, sturdy lining for a book cover or the bottom in a bag. It is cheap too.

Dollar store sells, wooden board folders with a clip at top to hold your papers.. Take clip out.. Would that work? Be strong, thin and light. What my mother used for my folder made of denim..
