ironing board

Post by TooMuchFabric » Tue Mar 22, 2011 4:43 am

I use a plain old (really old) ironing board and would love to have one of the large ones but then there is the price thing so I was wondering others use.

What kind of ironing board or table do you use?

I bought a new Rowenta Ironing board from Amazon - it is extra wide - I can lay a 12 1/2 block across it to press them. It is very heavy and it is sturdy too. It was expensive - but I am very happy with it.

I have also made a small portable pressing mat for piecing by just covering a 14 inch width of pine board - I had extra from shelving - padded it with warm and natural batting and the cover is a tan or white t-shirt fabric. It is about 12 by 18 or so - whatever I had left. The t-shirt knit, I got at a Jo Ann's. To hold everything thing in place - I used long thumbtacks on the backside and hammered them in. When the cover gets too bad - I just change it out.

Good luck - I did find many of the ironing boards in the stores to be very flimsy

my husband built a frame to go around my existing ironing board then he attached some ply wood to it to give me a wider board... I covered it and viola` had a bigger board... I didn't have the space for it so don't use it anymore but it was a great iron board.

it was nice to be able to take it off when I needed a smaller board.

Another question: Would one of the tall folding tables that has a fiberglass type top work if you used the insulated fleece for padding then used cotton or the silver stuff for a cover?

I am not sure if the plastic can stand the heat even with the insulbrite stuff or silver stuff... most iron boards are metal or wood with the silver stuff... maybe you could put some ply wood over it first????

wouldn't one of those tables be kind of low and maybe even a bit wobbly?

let us know what you come up with.

On the sewing room video El has a table with the iron and one of the steam things but I couldn't tell what material the top was made from. She has the height raised with pvc material.

My husband made me a large ironing surface out of wood covered with this ironing board pad I got in the fabric department at Walmart and then covered it with some thick and sturdy material. The cover and pad is secured with heavy duty staples underneath and the ironing surface is on a table, which is the perfect height for me.

Back on this one...do you know of any place to purchase a larger ironing board that is sturdy and affordable?

I found on Amazon.com a extra wide ironing board made by Rowenta - it is very sturdy and heavy too - I love mine - it wasn't cheap - but should outlast me!

Sharon Schamber has directions for making one on youtube. She covered a piece of plywood with a layer of cotton batting and then stapled cotton canvas over it. I used a scrap of plywood, and Warm & Natural batting and canvas from WalMart. It's less padded than my regular ironing board but the few blocks I've pressed on it don't show the cut edges imprinted on the front of the block.
