Fons & Porter Binding Tool
Not sure if this is the right category or not. I am trying to use the Fons & Porter Binding Tool, and I am having trouble understanding the directions. I know some of you have used this tool and love it. The first time, I cut the right binding too short - so I have to piece another strip on to it. The directions say to trim the right binding in the center of the opening, and I'm not sure where the center of the opening is that they're talking about. I just finished sewing binding again and I am scared to cut the right binding for fear it won't turn out again. If any of you quilters out there can give me some info on this tool, I would be so thankful.

Re: Fons & Porter Binding Tool
The opening is the unbound space between where you stopped on the left and right sides. Does this help?

I love that tool!!
The center is the space where you started applying the binding and where you stopped. Leave about 12 inches of binding free from where you start applying the binding. You have two tails of binding - from where you started about 12 inches and from where you ended about 12 inches. Leave a 8-9 inch space on the edge of your quilt that still needs to have binding. This space is where the bias seam will be. That space is where you find the center. Now trim the ending strip(where you were sewing last) to the center of the opening. Lay the tool on the edge of the binding at the end where you just trimmed. Don't move tool. Lay beginning binding tail over the tool to the size of your binding strip -(strip cut width) like they say, to example of 2 1/2 inch width. Mark with a pin that line and cut just that tail at the pin, straight across the strip. I don't cut on top of my quilt - I place a small cutting board under each tail so only to cut one tail at a time.
Now open up the full width of both bindings , match cut ends right sides together - strips will be at 90 degress to each other. Mark the seam line and stitch, watching to sew on the pencil line. At this time before any more cutting - I audition to see that everything fits and is not twisted in any way. If it fits, then I cut.
I finger press the diagonal seam open and the fold again into place and finish the stitching to the edge of my quilt.
I hope that this helps rather than to confuse you more - any more questions - please ask - you can pm me if you need to
Good Luck
Jana

I am also a fan of this tool. In less than 5 minutes you have perfect binding.

Ditto.........I LOVE this tool..........makes my binding perfect every time. Just keep the tool and the directions in a baggie and in the same place every time, so you can find it easily every time you need it.

I was just looking at a video on You Tube demoing the Binding Tool.
