Combination rotary/ruler

Post by judyquilts » Thu May 21, 2009 2:36 pm

Has anyone used the new ruler/rotary cutter combination ruler? I got it at Wal Mart. It is made by Fiskars but guess my senior moments are taking over again and I don't know how to use it to be sure of accuracy. It is a great idea but is not doing me any good so far. Hope someone can help and explain this one to me on a "first grade level" ? :)

I purchased the cutter/ruler some while ago after watching Elanor use it on one of her shows. I used it for a while but did not find it to too useful or accurate. When I tried to change the blade the whole thing fell apart & I was not able to get it back together. It is one of those things that look like a good idea & turn out to be a waste of money.

I love mine. You just need to be careful lining up the marks. I use it for cutting strips and larger pieces/squares. For smaller blocks and pieces it can be cumbersome.

Line up the ruler with the gridlines of you mat, place hand same as you would for any ruler(one fimger off to side to stabilize it), Press the wheel down firmly and push away from you.

I have 1 and don't use it I find that it keeps cutting the fabric all jaggered I might let my DD have it maybe she will have a little more patience than I.

I love mine especially when cutting strips. I have a couple sandpaper dots on the bottom of the ruler away from the cutter to help stabilize it. Then I also hold it firmly with my left hand after lining up my fabric, firmly push down and forward on the cutter, using a fluid forward motion, for a perfect cut every time. If you start and stop you increase the risk of movement and jagged cuts.

Practice on scraps until you get the hang of it, once you do you will love it.

I bought one when my dgd started quilting with me because she was afraid of the rotary cutter. She saw El using it and asked me if I could find her one. She uses it for long strips, like others here have posted, and I found one of the cutters that opens when you push down on it to cut and closes when you let up for when she has to cut smaller pieces. She prefers the cutter/ruler combo for longer strips because it cuts straighter. Like what was suggested before, practice with it on scraps and you will get the hang of it.

I saw these at WalMart too. I have one someplace. It was a gift from long ago. It was complicated for me to figure out. Really, how hard can it be? But for me it was.

It seems complicated to me also but probably just takes a lot of practice and scraps. lol
