Bobbins and spray

Post by Chrissy1 » Thu Apr 30, 2009 1:19 am

Is there any kind of a sewing machine (that doesn't cost more than a new car hehehehe) that has something that makes the bobbins for you or is like a continuous bobbin? Also, last evening at our mystery quilt class when some of the ladies would iron their pieces, they used this bottle of green water type stuff to spray them before they ironed them. Our instructor was busy and by the time I got visiting with her I totally forgot to ask. Thank you

Were the ladies using Mary Ellen's Best Press starch alternative? I LOVE that stuff. It's pricey but it smells so good and doesn't leave white flakes and it gives your fabric nice body. I buy mine by the gallon so it's a little less expensive. It comes in several different fragrances.

I can't answer your bobbin question.

Don't know about the machine, but I'm sure they were using Mary Ellen's Best Press. And Cindy is correct.....it's fabulous!! I like the Lavender Fields. There's also Citrus Grove and Caribbean Beach.

Also Cherry Blossom and an unscented one. My BabyLock Espire doesn't wind the bobbins for me, but it DOES signal when the bobbin is low. I love that feature. I've been known to sew MILES with no bobbin thread!

I have found some prewound bobbins for my Pfaff - they work great and are not too expensive

I wish they had some of that spray without a scent:( I can't even be around most scented candles without having an asthma attack. Oh well, I'll just keep using water.

My Brother QC-1000 has a bobbin winder on it, but I think you mean one without having to rethread it? I use a sidewinder to wind ones for my treadle machine, it just takes too long on the machine and by the time I'm done my poor legs are killing me:)

See if you can find an old machine at a thrift store that isn't a treadle. They had the old ones where(at least my 60s metal does) you had a spool pin in the front, and you were able to wind the bobbins without un-threading. I am pretty sure you are talking about the new ones that wind the bobbin automatically?
This is something though that you may want to think about. Or, just get a spare machine that you always have set up to wind bobbins. Again, check thrift stores!

You can also use a "sidewinder" to fill bobbins on the side without using your machine. I know these are sold at Jo Ann fabrics in store and online.

My older Singer Quantum winds automatically, it has a drop in bobbin, I don't have to take the bobbin out, it winds from the needle. It has a bobbin low light too. It's one of the most hassle free machines I have.
