I have a table top ironing board but would like to have a large surface to use when I am quilting. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to make one. I thought about just covering a piece of plywood with some batting and muslin. Do you need to use some kind of heat reflector? Any thoughts would be appreciated. I have a large sewing table with a large cutting mat at one end and thought it would be nice to add the ironing board there. I like a larger surface so that I can set and press alot of pieces at once.

Do a Google for ironing board for quilting. Lots of good instructions are online. Here is a picture of one board.

my dh made a frame of 2x2's and topped it with light weight ply wood... underneath the frame he put another frame so it would fit snugly on top of my ironing board.... I found a long padded thing at JoAnns and it looks like a cutting mat with all the measurements but it is for ironing on top of........so I put this ironing pad on the plywood thing DH made....everything was so so perfect till I washed the cover.. it shrunk... but it is all still usable and it can be taken off my iron board easily... very light weight...

Least expensive idea. I just lay an old sheet, folded in half on one end of my cutting table, no padding, no insulation. It works great for me.

I bought one from The Big Board online few years back. Love it!! I think website is bigboardenterprises.com. Makes a big difference. Don't see why you can't make one either, though. Pretty simple concept.
