larger Ironing Board

I am about to request a larger ironing board to be built by Husband. Do you all have any hints and suggestions of the best size, and any info we need. If any of you have these bigger boards, what is the size and are there any special features?

Hi Debbie! My Big Board is 59" x 22". On the underside it has strips of wood on three sides that allow it to fit onto the old ironing board so that it doesn't slide around. It is the best money I ever spent at a quilt show!!! My DH could have made it, too, but I didn't want to add another project to his list!! (They said the reason it was 59" long is because that was the longest length they could ship by UPS without paying a huge extra amount.)

I can spread out the 42 - 45" width of fabric on it to press and still have room to rest the iron while moving the fabric. I never take it off, as I can iron anything I need to iron on it without a problem. I had wondered if I would miss the tapered point of a regular ironing board for ironing shirts, etc., but I don't.

I have one,too. My board is 6' long and 3' across so I can reach across. I have 2 x 2's glued underneath just on the corners to raise it up and have the rubbery contact paper to keep it from moving. I have it on a dresser from the 1960's that is 6' long and had 9 drawers. My board has Warm and Natural on top and them a cover that has elastic on the corners so I can wash it. My friend just used a staple gun and stapled her bat and fabric to the back, works just as well. Amie

I bought one of the oversized ironing boards and turned it around so the narrow end is the end I use to set my iron and spray. It has a big rack underneath that is very handy. We still use the ironing board for clothes (sometimes) so like to have one up and handy.

Debbie, My DH made mine from some scraps of 1/4" plywood he had laying around. He then turned the ironing board over onto the board, penciled along the sides and glued strips along to frame in the ironing board. He didn't have any strips but when we went to Home Depot to buy them, I found some sticking out of their trash barrel. They said I could have them so my new big ironing board was free! I love using mine!

Hello Debbie. I have the same one that Gmaann has and I dearly love it. It is the best money I have spent. The size is perfect!!!!!!! I Googled for LG Ironing Board or something like that and found a place where I could order mine. Can't remember where it was now. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the info, I know that we will be making the board ourselves, but I will definitely do some more research. And take into consideration your comments.. Thanks again and I will post the pics when it is completed.

Debbie they have plans for them on connecting threads sight and they fit on your exsisting ironing board .
