Incredible Shrinking Thread

Post by sewbug » Mon Jun 23, 2008 2:53 am

At Paducah, I bought several spools of this. When heated with iron the thread shrinks slightly puckering the fabric just a tad. I haven't used it yet, has anyone tried this? I don't even know what to use it for, applique, quilting, adding texture? The vendor didn't have but a small amount of the thread and no examples to show. I don't remember who the vendor was and there is no markings at all on the spool. It just says Incredible Shrinking Thread and the color number.

That would be interesting to use if making tops out of t-shirt-type material. or even just that.....machine embroider on blank t-shirts then shrink it for an interesting look!

Is this is the same as "fusible thread"? If so, I bought some awhile back and use it when I use the "birthing method" for baby quilts for charities. You know how you need to leave that little opening so you can flip it. Well, I could never get that edge to look just right so I now tuck in the fabric from the border and put a piece of that fusible thread inside and press it. That holds it so I can finish the edge with a nice decorative stitch or a zig zag.

Yeah, that's the thread I bought. I remember the vendor saying do not touch the hot iron to the thread, just the steam. If you iron it, it will just be ordinary thread and won't shrink after it gets hot. After it shrinks you can iron it if you need to press the piece.

I remember seeing it demo'd on an America Sews or America Quilts (I'm not sure which) within the past few months. Might check their web site.
