I use Madeira when I am doing special colors for wall hangings, table runners, bright colors, or tree skirts. I have used it for small quilts. But, the bobbin color is usually neutral, and this will vary as to what I am working on. Some machines like certain threads, and I think a person has to go with this. Machines are kinda like children, you have to find out what the machine works best with and use that depending on the materials. I cannot always pick what is on sale, since the material will vary as to what I work on. I do think it is best to plan ahead and have threads on hand for any future projects. I like a choice if and when that is possible.

I like Madeira Tanne for piecing but it is being discontinued. Robison-Anton and Superior seem to work OK. My Bernina hates Guterman with a passion !!! I have used 16 weight Madeira Lana (a sort of wool) and YLI Jeans Thread. Use a 90/14 top stitch needle and don't go too fast - that is my experience!!

For piecing I mostly use med. gray 50 wt. Aurifil in the bobbin and the top. If it shows it just looks like a shadow.

"Has anybody used the thread from "Connecting Threads"?"

I have used them and they are really nice. I have done 2 or 3 baby quilts with this and it did a wonderful job. I have never tried their fabric, so not sure on that one.

Just read something online about thread and the care of your sewing machine. The tech said that if you still have thread on a wooden spool, you should not use it in your machine because it is way too old, and the fiber and lint that comes off it will eventually jam up your machine. As well as the fibers will have weakened over time and the thread will break eventually. I guess I will have to save my mother's old collection of thread for something else.
