Re: Sewing machine Needles.........
I have been using the schmetz quilting needles, but I'm going to look for the sharps. I've never found needles on sale, (sigh).
A clean machine, a new needle are important and changing the blade in a rotary cutter makes life easier too. At least for me.

Re: Sewing machine Needles.........
I am always confused about how often to change needles on my machine. I don't hear any tunk a tunk sounds, but someone told me that I should change needles with each new project. I am usually working on several projects at one time, so that doesn't really help. Any general rules of thumb, like number of hours a needle can stay sharp, etc, etc. Thanks for any tips or insights. Kitty I don't know if it is true or not, but my neighbor told me when I first began quilting to change the needle ever 8 to 10 hrs of sewing. I don't always do that though. Hope someone will give you a better answer.

When I worked for a Bernina store for a very short time they suggested change your needle about every 8 hours........

Calico, I am with ya. I use the sharps, but I get whatever brand I happen to pick up and have seen absolutely no difference in performance. Now, endurance might be another thing, But IUsually manage to break a needle long before I am supposed to replace it! LOL

I found Schmetz Universal needles on sale at Jo-anns. They were 50% off over laborday

So that's what that "tunk a tunk" sound is! I thought my sewing machine was going on the blink.
I went and brought Schmetz needles, but didn't know what size to buy, so I just picked a pack.
What a difference! Thanks everyone!

The only way to get Schmetz needles on sale is with the 40% coupon at Jo-anns. Wal-mart here has them, a little bit cheaper, but not much. Happy hunting!!

I learned from Sue Bouchard, Eleanor's assistant, to change my needle everytime I finish a project. It may seemed excessive but Sue says that by doing this, she ensures that her needle is never dull and thus messes up her fabric.
