Thread for handquilters...

Post by PamM » Tue Sep 08, 2009 1:27 am

With so many products out there, I would like to get some information from those who hand quilt. What kind of thread you are using? A lot of information for quilting thread does not separate the the machine quilting and hand quilting.
Thanks, PamM

For hand quilting I use Mettler silk finished. It is very nice to work with. Mettler has a long staple cotton in it.

I have used YLI 100% glazed cotton thread. They say you should use a thread that has been glazed and will specifically say so. This makes it glide through the fabric without tangling. The glaze takes the place of using bees wax like our grandmother's used. It's really strong and made in the USA. Do not use glazed thread in your machine or it will cause problems. Can't say how it will wear but will let you know 20 years from tonight;>)) jan

I've used a variety of thread, both "hand quilting" and regular cotton or cotton/poly depending on the color needed, and what is available when I need it. If the thread doesn't glide nicely, I either use beeswax or Thread Heaven to coat the thread.

I find that longer lengths handle nicer if I use a glazed or coated thread, shorter if the thread isn't playing nice. I haven't noticed a difference in the wear, but there is some difference in the handling during the quilting process.

I would suggest that you try a variety of threads and treatments and see what works for you...

(I think I'll have to try the other recommended threads.)

To tell you the truth, I use Coat and Clarks for hand quilting and if I'm having a problem with the thread or the needle, I put it through an Ivory soap bar. My neighbor taught me that one. Never had a problem.

I usually use Coats and Clarks 'Hand Quilting Thread'. It doesn't break as easily as regular sewing thread. But do not use the hand quilting thread in your machine. It will gum everything up, LOL.

I use Guitermann thread 100% Cotton and it has a shine to it.(made in Greece) i see on the label. I'm like the others try different types and I stick with this rule. If it's cotton use cotton thread and if it's cot/pol then use cot/pol thread. A lady that I meet at a store said this to me. Happy Quilting and have a nice day.

I bought all the colors of the esental threads form conecting thread back when we got our income tax and I have just got into it but I did notice it tangled up alot when hand quilting so I run it thru a dryer sheet a couple of times and it works great no more tangles so you might want to try it Tina
