Marking powders

Post by purrfect-lady » Thu Jun 04, 2009 4:03 am

Has anyone else tried the powders for marking patterns on quilts for quilting? DH got me this for Christmas and I'm using it for the first time. It works, but I'm having trouble with it vibrating away before I get the design finished. I'm doing a simple design on 12-inch blocks. I traced it onto a template and cut it out myself. By the time I get halfway done with the third quarter of the design, I'm having to guess where the marks are - it all becomes a blur of powder. Am I using it wrong? Is it just not a good system? Off brand ("Quick Swipe")? I'd appreciate any input anyone has. thanks! maryz

Just a couple of suggestions. You are supposed to rub it on not pounce, also you can spritz your fabric with water before you apply and it will stick better, also if your quilt sandwich is vibrating you have too much tension on it, back it off a notch or two - hope this helps :o)

Thanks for the tips, Littlebit. I was thinking of spritzing with water, but DH has a tendency to fill up my bottles with bleach solutions for various things and I was hesitant to use any of the bottles at hand. So I need to buy a new one and put a big "HANDS OFF, DH!" sign on it. I'll loosen the sandwich a bit, too. Appreciate it! mz
