folding ruler

Last fall at our retreat, Corning told us all that her newest favorite tool was the big folding ruler. Well, I bought one when she and I went to Paducah and I have really liked it for squaring the edges of those table runners. That's the only thing I've used it for, and it's great for that. I think there is someway to use it to cut setting triangles, but I'd have to research that a little.

Where can I see the folding ruler. Had not heard of that one.

I bought it from the Salem Co. at Paducah. The co. that sells the big white cutting boards. Try a web search. Okay, I just did it for you. Go to

scroll down the page, they are actually called folding squares (my father had a very nice metal square that he used when I was a child and I have thought about using it for my quilting, but I don't know what happened to it. I may still have it in the boxes of his stuff. We weren't allowed to touch it. He used it for painting billboards, back in the day when they were done by hand.

I purchased the Flip-n-Set after watching Darlene Zimmerman on Sewing with Nancy. She did very impressive things with it on the borders and binding of quilts...like SewBug I have not ever used it.

I have used mine for squaring the corners on some table runners. That's all I've had time to do.

The ruler is called flip an set. It's a great ruler. Nancy's Notions carries it and so does Joanne's, Hobby Lobby might have it too. Thought El had it but don't see it on the site.

I picked one up during the shop hop here last fall. I have not used it yet, but bought it with plans on using it when I do my next 'on point' quilt. You can cut the corner and side triangles from straight strips and still have the bias on block side instead of the binding side. The neat part about it, the directions/widths of strips are right on the ruler so no figuring or trying to remember where the instructions are.

I never thought to use it as a corner guide. I just use my 16 inch square up ruler from El for that.
