Lap Quilting hoop/frame?

I'm looking for a portable quilting hoop/frame. When I took a handing quilting class a while back, I bought a 12" hoop - similiar to an embordiery hoop. It worked fine for my little wall hanging, but I'm quilting a full size quilt, and between the size and the cat, it's killing my shoulders and neck.

So, I pulled out my Q-Snap floor frame. I'm now quiling twice at least twice as fast since I'm not having to hold up the frame. It's great, but simply isn't portable.

Yes, I want my full size quilt to be portable. more importantly I want to be able to gather it all up, frame/hoop and all and dump it into a box/laundry basket and tote it to another room.

So far, I've briefly looked at the Hintenberg lap hoop. I got called away before I really had a chance to study it.

Are there any other lap hoops out there? What are you using? What do you wish was different on it?

I have not used a lap frame yet but saw one on quilters TV that looked very nice. I have added the address for you to look at. Hope it helps.

I have a 18 or 22 inch I think, like a wooden embroidery hoop that I just love. A friend of mine has a portable snap together type that is made out of the same white plastic stiff as the Q-snap floor type. I've used hers while in the car and it's okay, but I'm spoiled to my wooden hoop. I do small wall hangings up to King sz with it.

I have a nice wooden Hinterburg hoop that is on a stand that tilts and rotates and I don't enjoy it at all. I always go back to my old embroidery type hoop. But it is thicker than an embroidery hoop. Got it yrs ago at a Quilt Shop in Amarillo Tx.

I too, had a hintenberg frame on a stand and sold it. It rotated around and up and down but it just did not work for me. I use a 16" hoop and set at a card table in a straight back chair. That way the quilt in the hoop rests on the table and my shoulders and back do not hurt. I do all sizes of quilts this way. just finished a queen size Sun Bonnet Sue Quilt. Marge

Hi Pam, I have used Jean Brown's lap hoop and am now doing a queen sized quilt on it. It has legs and a base that allows you to get your hand up underneath it without having to hold it up. And it is totally portable. I am able to sit and watch TV and quilt (when I can find the time.) I use Jean Browns' method of quilting with the Aunt Becky but you could use it for regular hand quilting too. I believe she only has 2 sizes with the biggest being 14". Anything bigger would be too big as you can only get your arm up as far as the elbow. You can also turn it in any direction you need to quilt comfortably. I'm still looking. I haven't been able to find anything but the Hinterburg locally. Given the prices of the hoops, I'm hesitant to buy without seeing it first.

I like the concept of Grace's square hoop. I like the price of Jean Brown's hoop. So, I'll keep debating, make a few more calls and then finally make a decision -- eventually.

Pam I purchased a Quilting and embroidery hoop with stand by Frank Edmonds, size 18"x27", from Hobby Lobby. I quilted a kink size quilt on it. I found it was actually easier to use than my traditional quilt frame. The only thing I thought I might like better was if it were a few inches bigger so I didn't have to reposition the quilt so often. However, as I have continued using it for other projects, I have decided the size really isn't so bad after all.
