Water Soluble Thread

What is the purpose of using Water Soluble Thread? Is it for basting?

I did some machine trapunto with it. I made a sandwich with batting and top fabric with some stabilizer on the bottom. Then stitched around the outline of the design as drawn using the water soluble thread. I cut away the batting around that area. Put in another layer of batting, (the first layer was a puffier polyester, then second layer was thinner cotton) and the backing. Then I did the quilted the details of the trapunto portion and also stippled the background. After rinsing the water soluble thread and backing goes away.
Frankly before I took the class I wondered also. Did you use it for making clothes you only wanted to wear once? I guess it could also be used for basting.

I heard of someone making a swimsuit for someone else using water-soluble thread. What a dirty trick!!!! LOL

I heard that you use it for basting and then it disappears when you wash it. Does away with having to pull all that off colored thread out when the quilt is done. I was told that it is very sensitive to water and you were not to wet your finger before you tried to thread your needle! Just what I've heard but never used it...........Jan

I use it when I'm machine quilting. I machine quilt anyway I want with it, I don't try to keep the stitches even or follow a pattern. I quilt very close so the quilt is a stable as can be. I then machine quilt using regular thread and I don't have to worry about the underneath slipping or puckering. I wash the quilt and all the fake quilting comes right out. It may be silly to some but it saves me frustration and I get great results.
