June Taylor

Post by DeniAZ » Sat Jan 03, 2009 7:55 am

I finally invested in a June Taylor Shape Cut ruler, and am struggling with my rotary cutter.

I use a Dritz cutter, with the automatic blade cover, and have a problem getting the blade into the groove to begin the cut.

What rotary cutter do you use? Any tips on this ruler for me?

Thanks! Deni

Deni, I have a June Taylor Quarter Cut and use an Olfa rotary cutter. Works fine together. Sounds like the auto blade cover is causing you trouble. Lyn

I have a shape cut and use a fiskars 45mm cutter... my cutter stays open till I push a button to close it.

are you making sure the fabric is not too close to the start point in the ruler?

there is an almost teardrop shape where you start your cutter, make sure the fabric isn't in that area... it seems to need a little room to start....

keep playing with it I am sure you will love yours as much as I love mine...

I just used mine for the first time today and used a Clover rotary cutter that stays open till I close it. Mine worked fine.

Thank you all for your quick replies! I had to pick up my daughter from a friend's home - just 1 mile from Joanns :)

The rotary cutters are on sale, so I got a 45mm Olfa. It does work better than the ones that automatically close and the 45mm works better than the larger or smaller ones that I already had.

I must confess that my first few tries didn't turn out so well, I guess I didn't keep an even pressure on the blade. So I just tossed those over my shoulder (feeling a little like El), and kept trying. With a little more practise this should be a lot faster than my usual method!

Chriss, it does seem like keeping the fabric towards the back of the ruler works better. Thanks for your suggestion!

Deni, you will end up loving this ruler.... get yourself some colored painters tape or some bright post it notes... if you need 2 1/2 inch strips mark the slots with either the tape or part of a post it note... this way you will always know where you are cutting when you get distracted.

you mentioned a daughter... be careful when she is around your rotary cutter... I have an awful habit of leaving mine open and those blades are so sharp.... but you probably knew that...

have fun with your new toy.

Already seeing a difference.

I'm used to stacking several layers and slicing through. With this ruler I'm starting slow, just one or two fabrics, and run the cutter a second time to make sure.

Chriss, Thanks for the reminder about closing the cutter. DD is 14, and can sew a pretty 1/4"... She refuses to touch my rotary cutters. (I've had two bad cuts.) I cut, she sews - Wonderful! Now if she just loved it as much as I do.

I've completed a log cabin wall hanging since I purchased this ruler earlier today! (Sewing on the binding now) Yes, this is definitely faster than the the other rulers.

I use the shape cut to size up my quilt blocks. I put one cutting line right down the middle of the blocks and then trim on each side at the right size cutting line for the size of the block.

I only have trouble with mine if I try to hurry too much! My rotary is an Olfa (stays open until I close it). I dearly LOVE this shape cut ruler!! I've had it for a long while and never really used it until someone on here posted about it. Got it out and love it to death!
