I like Schmetz and Organ needles so I have Ebay set to send me an email when those brands are listed. I only buy the brand name not comparable to, learned my lesson doing that. Kenmore needles are good but I can't find out what manufacturer makes them. I think Klass does, which are good needles too. Singer makes two different quality of machine needles. The lower quality sold at WalMart and many chain fabric/craft stores and the best quality that seem to be elusive. It's impossible to know which is which on Ebay and if any sewing machine store doesn't know about the two different qualities, don't buy from them.

Seems like Walmart contracts with just about every one to do a lower quality product. My sister bought a pair of Dr. Scholls shoes and they fell apart almost instantly. When she called the company they told her just too send them back and that Walmart gets the lower quality made just for them. Sewbug how can you tell the good needles from the bad if you are looking at them? jan in Punxsy

Wow, I am GLAD I asked this question. I would probably leave a needle in for a year if it didn't break. (And lorettav thinks she is dumber than dirt! Guess I am, too!)

Donna and all,
Discount Embroidery Supply also has needles at a great price, somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 cents apiece. At that rate, I find I am much more likely to change the needle often. Like many have said, about 8 hours between needles works best for me.

I've got a friend who brings them to me at my spring retreat from Idaho. She quilts for others and apparently gets to order wholesale. I use Schmetz needles.

As for the blades. I found a place in MN who resharpens blades. I had picked up blades here and there, and mom and a couple of friends gave me their old blades, so no I get 10 - 12 sharpened at a time. Occassionally, I'll pick up new blades w/ a 50% coupon.

I just did a search on Schmetz Bulk sewing machine needles and found them several places. Here's one - not that I've bought from them before.

The top quality Singer needles will have the word Chromium on the package or be in solid color packages or paper packages. Not the yellow/combo color packages you see at most notion racks.
