New favorite sewing notion...
fingernails!
For some reason, in the last week I've lost nearly all of my fingernails. That is to say they've broken down to the quick. No idea why since they've been growing and I've had to keep them trimmed back. Anyway, I've finally been sewing the last couple of days and I can't grab the pins out of the fabric! I didn't realize how valuable my nails were to sewing. I sure hope they grow out soon.

You too? I have broken all of mine down so short I am embarrassed! Since I stopped having the acrylic nail tips done, my nails are not in the best shape anyway but at least they were there. Now? Geesh! I went last night to WMart and got vitamins for Hair/Skin/Nails. Figure it has to be something I am lacking.LOL Well in that case the vitamins won't help. LOL Wonder if it is weather related? Or stress? But they are such a valuable tool for sewing and quilting!!! I feel your pain & loss.

Try additional calcium. Sometimes if your body is low in calcium your nails get brittle and break easily.

Yes, fingernails really come in handy! I notice that too when mine break or I trim them real short. And scratching an itch isn't the same without them either. LOL

Yes, fingernails are essential to quilting/sewing. Mine are usually long and yet when I sew, I need to trim them to a shorter length. Need a little nail length ot pick up pins, etc. It helps!

I've about decided it was my manicure that caused all my nails to break off in the space of a week. I typically just use an emory board for shapping, but I got stopped in the mall at a nail care kiosk. They were selling some nail care products and with a buffing square brought the shine out on a couple of my nails. I was impressed, but didn't have the money to spend on the kit. Got to thinking about it and picked up a buffing bar at the drug store for significantly less money. I had nice smooth and shiny nails - for about 2 or 3 days. Then they started popping off. Then I rememembered getting a professional manicure several years ago before a business trip - no polish or clear one and when I got off the plane they started popping. Had no nails by the time I got home. So, I think I may have damaged them buffing them too hard.
They are still short, but growing out. I've now got a technique to pull pins with my ring finger, but I can't wait until the nail on my first finger is a smiggen longer.
