Orbital Rotary Cutter Blade Sharpener

Post by knitnoid » Sun Jun 29, 2008 6:47 am

Earlier this spring I saw an add for this sharpener, but couldn't find it locally. (Ok, didn't hit ALL the quilt shops and admittedly wasn't looking very hard). This weekend I tripped over it at a quilt shop in Joplin. I asked the owner about it, but she hadn't sold any yet. She bought them after talking with her distributer. she said the distributor was skeptical until they used it, then they started raving about it.

Well, I bought it. Last night I sharpend my first blade. It feels sharp, but I haven't tried cutting with it -- got to locate the cutter. i think it definately works better than that blue sharpener with the ring that I had before, but this is a heck of a lot more steps.

Has anyone else used this product?

Well........????? Knitnoid, I'm waiting to hear how the sharpened blade worked and if you think it was worth the cost. I hate a dull blade, but they sure are expensive.

I think I'm going to have to work on my technique. I now have a 'flat' on my blade - of course, I could have had the flat before I attempted to sharpen it, so I don't think we should take my first attempt seriously.

I'll get another blade out, see what it is doing, and then attempt to sharpen it.

Hmmmm. This is begining to sound complicated. On the other hand, with the price of everything going up and up.... I sure hope the Orbital works.

I have one of these, not sure if it is the same as yours. But I find that it really helps clean up the blade, any time I start finding little spots that get missed or it seems to not be cutting as deep, I just take the blade off and give it a few twists with the grinder and it is like new.
I don't think it will replace buying new blades, but it I think it extends the life of a blade quite a bit. I am quicker to sharpen the blade then I was to replace it and often would tolerate a less than perfect blade just to save a few bucks. But with this handy thing I never have to fuss with poor cuts and such.
