I made this for a friend,but will not be giving it,,,my borders are ripply..I cut straight,didnt stretch ,used a walking foot,and they still ripple....any hints??????

I love your colors.. When I had problem with my sides rippling
I started pinning. I would start in the middle and work out but, I am far your an expert just a thought.. Your runner is beautiful...

Caroline I think it is just BEAUTIFUL! I don't have any advice about the ripples. Maybe washing it isa real warm water & drying it? Geez, I don't know. Just wanted to comment on how pretty I think it is. I'd go ahead and give it as a gift. The thought that you made it and with love & care is what counts the most. None of us are perfect~! I'd be happy to recieve one like it.

Caroline, is there any quilting in the borders? It looks like there might be a little too much fabric in the borders so maybe try making the border strips a little bit shorter, pin to sew them on, then make sure it lays flat and the outer edge does not look floppy or stretched out. Then pin or spray baste and quilt it. Make sure it's all still flat before you put on the binding. I'm not an expert but that's what I'd try. Your runner is beautiful.

FYI I always had floppy borders when I just added a border without measuring the body of the quilt. Now I measure the width in 3 places and use the shortest measurement to cut my border fabric. The measurements shouldn't be off very much. Then I pin the border onto the quilt starting in the middle. Then I pin at the end. Then pin the rest easing if I need to. Then sew. I do the same way with the length of the quilt. My borders have not been floppy since I started using this method. I do it the same way when making mitered corners but I add the extra for the miter.

I like El's suggestion for those "problem areas": quilt the hell out of it! LOL Extra quilting might help hide the ripples. Or, could you just take the wide border off?

Take a deep breath, step back and take another look at it. If your friend isn't a quilter she may not even notice a few glitches.

My suggestion is dampen it, spray it with spray starch, iron it real good, then give it to your friend with the same love and affection that made you want to create it for her/him in the first place. If your friend is a real friend, he/she will only see beauty in the work of your hands.
