X block ruler

A yahoo quilting group I read wants to have a block exchange for this block. It makes an interesting pattern but it wastes too much fabric from what I can see on this website. Has anyone done this block and is the fabric waste as much as it looks?

It just hit me! I can draw this in EQ and make it a paper piece pattern! The ruler is the product not the block design of the nine patch, so copyright is not breeched? I feel odd about this stuff if I'm not sure.

I think I agree with sewbug, the ruler is the product. However, since it is just a 6 1/2 or 7 1/2" ruler, it seems that you could do this with any ruler of that size. You would have to mark your ruler to ensure that you cut each block exactly the same way.
I like the pattern, it is intersting but you are right, it looks like you waste a lot of fabric.

That is a pretty cool techincue but it does seem like a lot of wasted fabric.

The block reminds me of the FLIC FLAC block I have sewn - pieced multi-colour squares are cut again - you just place a square template with a cross (at certain angle) on it on the INTERSECTIONS of the squares. According to the angle of the cross the resulting pinwheels are "fatter" or "thinner", you have to try and find your favourite shape. I do not think you need a special ruler for this.

Here is the FLIC FLAC block design that Inka mentioned.

The Easy Twist Ruler is really neat. You can see it demoed on Quilter's TV in the episode called "See Stars". It's at the end of the show.

Hardly any waste of the fabric.

I just finished making an X-block quilt and there is absolutely NO waste. The pieces I cut off the corners were used in the borders. It took me one day (started on Thursday and finished piecing on Friday) to piece a lap quilt (30- 7.5" blocks plus 2 borders). It was really fun and the ruler made it simple. Can't wait to do another!

Sewbug - I think it's smart of you to do it on EQ.
