Ollie could you use tracing paper or maybe the clear template plastic?
Maybe someone else will give better ideas.

How about trying some old fashioned tissue paper....or just try drawing them freehand and be inspired by the quilt and then draw your own version.

This is going to sound weird -- but if you have a flat bed scanner, what about folding the quilt up and scanning the quilt -- or take it to a copy center and copy the appliques. For the larger ones, you may have to copy them in sections -- put a pin in the quilt to mark where the pages should join.

I use white tissue paper & you can easily see through it.

If you have a digital camera you can take a picture of each piece, edit it in a picture program and covert it to a line drawing then print it out. I've recently been playing with importing photos to EQ and converting them to blocks.

I would put it on the copy machine at work, or a scanner would work, too. I have copied applique before and as long as there's a good contrast between the applique and the background it works great.
