Homespun Fabrics and Applique?
Okay, here is the story...I joined our local guild a couple of months ago and we are getting ready to start a new BOM. It is "Santa Throughout The Year." The background of the blocks are pieced and then the applique on top. I am fairly new to applique and we will be using Wonder Under and then stitch it down with our machines. Now, my question is...Is it possible to use Homespun fabrics for the applique? Or will it ravel when washed, even with the Wonder Under and stitching?

My opinion is that the fusible pretty much keeps the fabric stable, and if you do a satin stitch around it, it should be OK. (I have always had trouble with Wonder Under - gumming up the needle and then the thread breaks. But I use both HeatnBond Lite and TransWeb with no problems.) Anyone else have this problem with Wonder Under?? Don't want to prejudice Kristie, if it's a problem only for me!!

I've never had any problem with wonder under. I used to do crafts and I used homespuns with the wonder under but I used a satin stitch all around the applique. I never had any raveling but then I never washed any of the items either. I don't know if this helps or not.

Use a topstitch needle when you have problems with the thread shredding or breaking. Even when the needle gums up. I did some emboidery last night with heat n bond applique (in places 2-3 layers) and even with the speed of the emboidery I had little problems. Sometimes just changing type of needle, fabric, fusible or thread can solve the problem. Happy stitching!
I LOVE that wall hanging. I have looked at that since it first came out and keep debating on getting it. Keep us posted on your progress.

Re: Homespun Fabrics and Applique?
When I took a machine appliqué class we used 505 adhesive spray. Worked really well. We used a large lid for a box (like a coat box or lid to printer paper box), placed the material in the box lid wrong side up, and sprayed it, then positioned it on the fabric where we wanted it. It did not gum up the machine. When we were done, we just threw the box lid away, bye bye mess.

What are you referring to when you say homespun? Here it is plain coloured fabric with no pattern whatsoever.

Some of the homespun that I have is plain colored with no pattern and some of it is plaid. I have used it on appliqued wallhangings, but I am just wondering if it will hold up in the wash. I am afraid that where it has such a loose weave that it might ravel too much. I guess I could always applique a sample and wash and dry it.

Re: Homespun Fabrics and Applique?
I made 2 lg quilts using Wonder Under and a variety of red prints then did machine sewing using decorative stitches around ea. one and they have done very well. This was maybe 5 yrs ago and 1 of them has been washed many times.
Kadie I call a fabric that is all 1 color and no pattern or print at all, a Solid. A Calico is a fabric that has tiny little flowers in a diff. color. Or am I wrong Gals? LOL Today I have been wrong so much I am now questioning ever move I make.LOL Ever have 1 of those days? GEESH!

OK
Over here the "solids" are called homespuns that is why I was mixed up. (or more mixed up than usual...I woke up this morning with "mush brain syndrome" I think)
thanks for setting me straight
