Setting Triangles

Post by ScrapQuilter » Wed Aug 22, 2007 8:26 pm

Does anyone have any tips for sewing setting triangles. I have all the math information and just need enough nerve to get started.

I saw a demo a long time ago where the setting triangle was sewn from the point outward on each side for better accuracy.

I'd like to avoid bias on the outside edge, but all the directions I've read says to cut the setting triangle from a square, and that means outside edge bias.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I purchased a ruler that is made for setting triangles. No more figuring out what to cut. Yes, the edges are on the bias but handle them with care and pin well, I do not cut them ahead of time, only the moment I need them. Marge

Starched fabric helps with those bias edges. I mark lightly on the triangle 1/4" on both sides up toward the point. Where the lines intersect gives me that dot I'm looking for.

Yes www.nancysnotions.com has the ruler for this.

It is item number EZFNS flip.n.set
the catalog number is 076211-2621

The cost of the ruler is 16.98

The combo book, dvd, flip.n.set and scallop ruler is 49.99 reduced with this catalog number from 73.46.

You can do it just with the ruler. The math is taken out of it. It is simple.

The book gives you more ideas for quilts. I purchased the book and flip.n.set ruler.

In several of Eleanor's books she explains how to cut triangles with the straight of grain on the outside edges.

I can't think of which one, maybe the still stripping or quilt through the seasons book.

I've had to dismantle my sewing/quilting room. DS is having dinner guests tonight and he wanted everyone to dine in the dining room. Tried to talk him into taking everyone to a restaurant. Oh well. Tomorrow I will put it back together. If I come across instructions before then, I will post them.

I use the "companion angle" which is for cutting those triangles with the long side of the triangle on the straight grain of the fabric.

Starch your fabrics...good idea because it will keep them from being so stretchy....and sew those inset pieces whether they be corner squares or the triangles from the inside point to the outside edge. Mark a dot with a pencil where your 1/4" from the point begins. I also do one back stitch after beginning just so it won't pull out.

Why don't you give it a try on some scrap pieces that you don't care much about and then you will get a little more confidence. You don't have to do it excellent the first try!!! :))
