Since I am a new quilter, I need your help. I finally decided to try a Mystery Quilt with the local guild. It has gone very well. However, I have a question. I am ready to add sashings to the completed blocks. The directions do not say to square up the blocks, but isn't this something I should do?
Thanks for being out there to help me.

Yes, square them up. Just be careful if there are any triangles involved not to cut off so much on the edges of the blocks that you don't leave enough seam allowance for your triangle points. If you trim right next to the points, you will cut off your points when you sew your seam! You also have the option of adjusting the width of the sashing a wee bit to compensate for blocks of irregular sizes. I hope this all makes sense to you!

I've learned from past experience to always square up the blocks. On some where you have a several pieces that go together, I square all the pieces up to make sure they all fit right. This makes a huge difference when the whole thing starts coming together.

Remember - there is finished size and unfinished size. Usually if the block says it's 12", you need to make sure that you have 12-1/2" square blocks - 1/4" on each side.
