I am new to quilting and have finished my quilt top and have purchased my backing and batting but need to know do you prewash the batting also.

I am not an expert by any means but I have never pre-washed batting.

You do not as a rule wash batting prior to quilting. However if you are talking about warm and natural batting some people soak it in the washing machine and gently agitate it, and gently rn it thru the spin cycle. When warm and natural first came on the market many yrs ago it needed to be washed to get the seeds and oil out of it. But they have improved it greatly and I use it all the time and never pre-wash. The batting I have is 100% cotton

Just be careful if you wash it. I've washed it before and it fell apart. Maybe I should have used the gentle cycle. duh. Sometimes I'll just toss it in the dryer to get the wrinkles out. I think you can contact the company who makes it and they'll give you any info you need.

I never prewash any batting,,,,,,,some do and some don't. I like the scrunchy shrunkup oldfashion look.....but I do use the 80/20.

Have you looked on the package to see if there are washing instructions? I don't know about the l00% cotton - I don't think I'd try to wash it for fear of coming apart. The Hobbs 80/20 has instructions for preshrinking if you want, but you just soak it in the washer and don't agitate. It depends on how you want your quilt to look after washing if you preshrink the batting or not.
