Is there another way to finish the end of a binding to a quilt rather than the fold technique? That method works but I find it leaves that open line at times that is not very professional.

I know what you mean, Spicer, and I don't like it either. The Thimbleberries patterns always use this method. You can whipstitch it closed, but it still doesn't look good. I have some instructions all printed up, with diagrams, on how to finish the ends with a diagonal seam the same as the one you used to join the binding strips. If you are interested, send me a private message w/your name & address and I will mail you a copy.

They taught this method at the LQS in a class called Borders, Binding and Beyond. Quiltcreater's instructions should help you. Especially if there are diagrams. Once you do it, you will realize how easy it is and no one will be able to tell where it begins or ends.

Leave a 6" tail of binding as you begin sewing it to your quilt.
Stop sewing the binding 6" away from the starting point. Cut the end of your binding with a perpendicular cut so that it overlaps the beginning end of your binding. The length of the overlap must equal the width of your binding strip. (2" overlap for a 2" wide binding etc.) Open the folds of the two strips and overlap them at right angles with right sides together. Pin them together. Draw a diagonal line between the two points where the binding strips intersect (like sewing bias strips) Sew the ends together on the marked line (I use a basting stitch to make sure I have them lined up correctly then go back and stitch with a regular stitch when I am sure they fit correctly) and then trim the seam allowance to 1/4". Press the seam allowance open. Refold the seamed section of the strip, return it to the edge of the quilt, and finish sewing the binding in place...a perfect fit! I have so much trouble binding a quilt I just gave up...
I just use the heat bond stuff it works pretty well for me.
