Is 2 1/2 the widest binding I can add to get the mitered corner?

It isn't the width that you need to worry about, it is that you turn the corner at a 45 degree to get the miter. Turn the corner the same way as usual, just paying attention to your seam width.

I was taught the rule of 6 - that is 6 times your seam width, will give you the top, enough for the thickness of the batting, and the back. That is using binding that is folded in half - before you sew it on.

So if you want a wider binding, adjust the seam width, then, cut the width you need, watch the turn on the corner and you will be fine.
