Quilt in a Day Forums

When I sew pieces together I have been sewing with a 1/4" seam. I even measure the seam and it is a 1/4", but I have had some people tell me that it is too big, that I should be sewing a scant 1/4".

So what is the correct method? I am beginner and the information I am getting is really starting to confuse me.

Any help would be appreciated.

You usually sew all seams 1/4" unless otherwise stated. Sometimes patterns tell you to sew a scant 1/4" seam. If you are not getting the size block you are supposed to get you may not be cutting your pieces exactly what is called for.

I have found that the type of thread you are using can also make a difference in the amount of "space" it takes up. Believe me there are differences in threads! When the pattern calls for a scant 1/4 inch, I move my needle over one space. I usually measure across my blocks as I make the first one, using it as a "test" incase I need to make adjustments. When I took El's Teacher training class she taught us that the scant seam is just one thread width over from a true quarter - this aids in the pressing of the seam - so that when the seam is pressed over to one side you will then have a true quarter inch.

Sew a trial block with the pieces - both ways and see which one will meet the requirements for the finished block.

It is a lot of trial and error - so don't give up - and we love to answer questions!!

I don't worry about it. One little old thread won't make that much difference in the whole scheme of things. If your block is a few threads short in the end, just press it out. If a pattern specifically says 'scant' then I move my needle over a notch which clears my conscience.

I think, as long as the width is UNIFORM through the whole quilt, either will work just fine. i've done both.

I need help! I have tried everything to get a perfect 1/4 inch seam. I mark the seam on the right of the foot, I pin I measure and sew then measure again and when I am done I still don't have a perfect 1/4 inch seam. I even bought a new sewing machine my old one was just impossible to sew a straight seam on. New one is better, but can't get a perfect square to save my life. Any poinyers would be appreciated.Really Frustrated
