Quilt in a Day Forums

Has anyone ever done this? I made a beautiful quilt for my granddaughter's wedding. i want it to be as pretty on the backside, which is black, as it is on the front. The front has 10" black squares with appliqued batik hearts, then 9 patches of assorted jewel tone batiks. I love batiks. there is no border. Now I want to quilt it but I'm not a real good quilter, so I thought if I did it with embroidry floss and my normal larger stitches, it would look like I intended it to be different. I have assorted colors of floss to match the hearts and 9 patches in the quilt. I was going to have it long-armed and she suggested crosshatch diagonal quilting through the 9 patches just to the hearts. that sounds easy enough but with my inexperience I'm not sure how many strands of floss to use. And what the heck is thread heaven? Is it better than good old beeswax?

I would use 6 strands of floss. You can do a little bit on a practice piece (sandwiched the same as the quilt)and choose what you like (2,4,or 6).

I have no idea what thread heaven is but I would guess that it is the same thing as beeswax.

Since you want to do it in different colors, have you thought about in the hearts put memorable sayings that she may have said or things that happened in the past. I think embroidery writing or printing is easier. Just an idea.

Don't be critical about how you stitch, she will cherish it all the days of her life.

Loretta has some wonderful ideas... I was also going to suggest making a practice piece.. maybe the practice piece can be a nice sentimate made into a framed piece of art after you'e done...

I also wish your granddaughter and her new hubby a wonderful happy life together....

Thread heaven is like beeswax. It's used to coat your thread so it doesn't twist on you.

Can't wait to see the finished product.

hi, i've been quilting like this with a sew along quilt i made on this forum.
i have to say, i LOVE the effect too!
i've been using emb floss with large stitches, which i thicker than the 6 stand mentioned. it looks gorgeous, and as you mentioned looks great on the back...
