Dolly Madison Star

Does someone have an easier way to make the Dolly Madison Star without using triangle templates? (and I don't mean the simplied pattern). The block has smaller triangle pieced squares outside the center nine patch. I'm sure these could be made by sewing and cutting squares, but I can't quite figure out the cutting dimensions to make it fit together. The triangle pieces are small and stretch too easy, and then the whole block is askew.

Can you tell us what size you are looking at? We have some math folks that might be able to help you. If it is a 12 inch block you can look at quilters cache and the instructions are there. I also sent you a pm.
