Help re connecting blocks

I saw someone connect blocks without adding strips in between, instead seams were sewn, but then somehow the seam allowances were folded & stitched in such a way that they became the stripping. It was amazing, and very appealing because the quilter could quilt one block at a time. Has anyone else seen this? If so, do you remember how it was done?

It is usually referred to as Quilt as you go - I have seen it done - did one many many many years ago and quilted the block - sewed the top of the quilt seams together and then closed the back intersections by hand - it was one of my first quilts and it was OK - but never one of my favorites. I am not a fan of hand- stitching!
I have also seen it done - where you remove part of the batting from in-between the layers - roll the top and back out of the way and then quilt the smaller area with the batting and then put back the next section of batting - and so forth - working till you have the entire top done. It was shown on one of Alex Anderson's Quilt shows - Simply Quilts on the DIY netowrk a few years back. You might be able to look up those directions from that show.
Good luck -
Jana

I got the directions from
www.quilterscache.com quite awhile ago.
Maybe look there under:
How To Quilt One Block At A Time
Hope you find it. My mother made me one years ago and it still is holding together nicely. I don't mind hand stitching though and am thinking of trying one instead of trying to wrestle a big quilt through my little machine.

I think what you may be talking about is Cotton Theory quilting. Check out this link
http://www.quiltyard.com/index.phtml'>h ... ndex.phtml I have taken classes from Betty Cotton and it is really an interesting technique. You quilt little pieces of the quilt, and you quilt the sashing, then you seam them together and fold the seams over and do a decorative stitch and there you have it. Good luck.
