Very beginner help needed

Post by Sweetonion » Fri Mar 11, 2011 6:58 am

I have had Eleanor's Log Cabin Quilt in a Day book for about a month now. I got to attend her seminar at Puyallup last weekend. It was a lot of fun. Here's my dilemma: I've purchased my fabric for a baby quilt (no specific reason yet, maybe for someday grandchildren) but have been stumped at the very start about the directions in the book on tearing the fabric before you start cutting the strips. Can someone post, or direct me to where it is, very specific directions for cutting the fabric strips? Thanks so much!

Hi, On page 20 of the Log Cabin Book it says to cut a nick and tear the fabric. This will help put the fabric on the straight of grain-so when you cut the strips there are no dog legs or crooked strips. Just tear a piece off. I usually take a small piece that I have to tear it again to get it to go the entire length of fabric-from selvage to selvage.

To make a baby quilt you will find the directions for cutting the strips on page 15 of the book. The strips will be 2 1/2 inches wide and the numbers in the ( ) tells you how many strips of each fabric you will need. The center square color you will need 1 strip that is 2 1/2 inches wide. The first light you will need 2 strips that are 2 1/2 inches wide. The second light is 4 strips, and on and on.
Hope this helps. Have fun.

Isn't El delightful? Meeting her or attending one of her classes is so much fun.
Sandy, enjoying the sunshine.

you are welcome. You can do it. Just take it one step at a time, read and reread the instructions and go for it.

I suggest you may want to check out videos on YouTube in regards to quilting. There are so many helpful videos out there with step-by-step instructions. Good luck!
