I have seen several and they are beautiful. The two that I have seen did not have any special pattern. They used small scraps of materials, and it looked great. I believe the squares cut were 1 and 1/2 inches, so when sewed together they were about 1 inch in size. Really small to work with. It is easily done in chains if a person wanted to. It is also a good way to use up scraps. Look at quiltercache.com and it may have more info on that site. They have a wealth of info that I keep checking from time to time. Good luck.
I believe if I were making a postage stamp quilt, I would choose to use at least 2 inches, and even then it would be 1/1/2 in finished sewing. Have fun. They are beautiful.

The only quilt in my books was a Postage Stamp Basket quilt - it is in Diana McClun's original -- Quilts, Quilts, Quilts Book - it used pieces around 2 inches in the blocks.

My grandmother made one and it was made with 1 1/2" squares. There were around a 1000 little pieces. It was well worn but so wonderful.

I am currently making a queen color splash in Amish colors. The squares are 1 1/2 inches.
The book I use is called Color Splash trip around the world by piecemakers.
This book/pattern is super easy and uses the strip method.
