if i want to make triangles 4 7/8 on the short side, how big would i make the square? thank you. quiltedwhisker

If I remember my math right - for each 1/2 square triangle you add 7/8 for seam allowances.
4 7/8 side + 7/8 = 5 3/4 for your cut square - that should give you a very slim amount to trim to an accurate size - make one and then see - is my suggestion - I would error on a slightly bigger size and them trim to the accurate size of any piece that I am sewing. That sizing should give you two 1/2 sq triangles by sewing 1/4 inch from the center line (corner to corner) on each side of the center line

I add 7/8 to mine and they turn out good. Good luck. Always do one first as they person before suggested. These "trial" squares are always then put in a hotpad or something else. Have fun.
