Log Cabin

Post by pjquilting » Sun May 02, 2010 2:57 am

Hi Everyone,

I have a really old log cabin book and never got around to making it.

I plan on purchasing the latest edition but would like to save on shipping by placing only one order.

My question is: What size square up ruler is needed for the log cabin?

Also if anyone have any helpful hints they would be greatly appreciated.

God bless ya'll and your families

Since blocks can be made in many different sizes, I have one ruler that is 12 1/2 square. I find that I can use it for just about everything. If the blocks are larger than this, I just put another ruler (6 x 12") against it and it works for me. Good luck with the log cabin quilt, they sure can be beautiful.

If I was to do it over, I would just buy QIAD's 16" square up ruler!! It will handle all sizes of blocks...so if you do a 15" square or something smaller, it all works!

I too, like my 16 1/2 inch ruler, it is a little pricey but have never regretted purchasing it and have had it a long time. Works for a lot of quilt blocks.

Instead of sewing the logs on a long strip of fabric and then cutting them to size, I first cut all of my logs the size they should be and then piece them together. I find that I don't need to square up my blocks when I do this method. I also don't press every seam before adding another log ... I just finger-press. I recently finished a king-sized log cabin this way and it came together beautifully.
