Years ago I saw on Simply Quilts - you might be able to look up the episode on the internet on how to put the batting in sections - quilt it and move on to the next section.
The Media theatre here may have your answer on El's method.
I have made a quilt in block sections - sewed the top and batt together after quilting it and then hand-closed the backing fabric. I really did not like that quilt after it was done - in fact it now lives at the landfill because I was so unhappy with it. That was about 35 years ago!
Hope you have better luck
Jana

There was an episode of Simply Quilts where Kaye Woods made a "6 Hour Quilt". Like Jana suggested, you might be able to find an old episode by googling.
I was just browsing around and found this site:

I'm going to try this technique, it looks like fun. K. Woods is faster, but this one could be nice also.

I have done this technique especially on large quilts. I make my quilt block, batting and backing all the same size and quilt as desired. Put each block together. You will have raw edges showing on the back. I make my own bias tape the same color as the backing and place over raw edges and hand sew down. Basically the same idea but I think it is easier.

I have used Kaye Wood's method and I have used one of Marti Mitchell's as Loretta has done. I highly recommend Marti Mitchell's book in which she describes several techniques. Both method I have tried have their good and bad points but either is better than trying to quilt a big queen size quilt with the push and shove method. (pushing and shoving a whole quilt through the opening in a regular machine)

Pat, please look up "Cotton Theory" quilting by Betty Cotton. She has several books on her method of quilting also. Several of my quilting friends use her techniques quite frequently and the results are beautiful.
Here's the link to one of her books on Amazon:
