I square up with a square ruler (example if you have a 12-1/2" block take the 12-1/2 square ruler and find the center of the block and center of ruler and square up.) If this doesn't work or you don't have a ruler the right size fold block in 1/2 and 1/2 again to find center. Measure block from center down each side and mark for cutting to get an accurate block. Hope this makes sense.

Just make sure that all sides are the same length and you have a 1/4 seam allowance left before you trim off the excess. Especially where there are points to match

There are several sizes of square rulers - I have about 4 different ones I use depending on the size of the block. A diagonal line down the middle of the ruler is useful when squaring up half square and quarter square triangle blocks

Marcia, I use QIAD's Square-Up Rulers...they are awesome! The 12" one is, for me, the most useful. The directions are with the rulers. Once I started using them, I never had a problem!
