I would like to learn how to use the stab stitch method of hand quilting and was wondering if anyone does it. I have seen articles but there is very little detail. Thank you, PamM

Pam, I hand quilt, but I have never heard of the stab stitch method. I'll have to search around for that one. Maybe some of the other hand quilters will see your post soon and get back to you with an answer.

I am probably very wrong but I thought the stab method was just taking the 1 stitch at a time. Like stabbing it going down and then coming back up. As I said, I am probably very wrong. LOL I need to go search this. LOL

Pam, I've wondered about this too. My wrist starts to get numb after about 5 minutes of holding a needle. Makes sewing on a binding a bit interesting. There are double pointed needles with the hole for the thread in the middle of the shaft that are made for stab stitching. Hancock's of Paducah has them but doesn't have a picture of them yet. I thought they would help since you wouldn't be flipping the needle over with every stitch. Maybe someone here has tried them.

Mary, I have a package of these needles ordered. I also have a quilt that will be ready for the frame in a couple weeks. Once I get the quilt set up in the frame, I should be ready to give this method a try. I will let you know if the needles work for me. One thought, I stab myself quite a bit somedays, so these needles may give me an opportunity to do it twice as many times. Just a thought.

from what i have read it is just taking one stich at a time, you poke needle down then hand under the frame pulls it through and pokes it back up,,, you are taking one stich at a time, .I do this when going over seams but it is harder to keep stiches even doing it this way. i have been teachingmy self the rocking stich method and i find this easier. after two weeks of practing i can do 7 to 8 stiches to an inch every time, front and back look the same. one of these days i will get better, i took my practice pieces in to the quilt shop and they were really suprised, the lady who teaches hand quilting said i had really caught on fast and i was ready to start on real projects now.

PamM, grannyQuilts1 is right about how the "stab stitch" is done. I read about a girl (this was years ago) who did all her quilting this way. I've tried it, and like grannyQ, still do when I have a difficult section to quilt, or need to cross seams. It is VERY slow going though. I've seen the double needle, but haven't ever used one.

I stab stich all the time that's all i know how to do I was hoping to learn the rocking motion till I read the post about how it hurts your hands and sholders thanks for the post Tina
