Blocks

I watch EL on TV and she always makes her blocks bigger and then trims them down. Could someone tell me how much to add?

I use her method a lot!

For instance, when instructions say to use 3 7/8" squares to make half-square triangles, use 4" squares instead. Then when they are made, use your square up ruler to trim down to the proper size.

I do that too. But when I have to cut a lot of squares for something I make the strips about 1/4 bigger and then cut my squares. I do that because I don't cut very straight no matter how hard I try. I don't know if it's my bifocals or just my hands aren't steady enough even with the new gripper thingy. But I like El's way of making the blocks bigger to square up especially with those pesky triangles.

I don't know if Eleanor uses a formula and adds a specific amount. It depends on the block, I think.

If you are making a block with multiple seams, you have a higher likelihood of its coming out crooked or too small. A consistent seam allowance, especially if you are making multiple blocks, is the key. If seams meander too much, blocks come out wonky. Once your blocks are done, they can be squared up to a consistent size so the quilt top comes together nicely.

I haven't done much applique', but I believe applique' squares need to be made larger to make up for the way the background pulls up a bit. The blocks are then squared up after the applique' is stitched down.

One of the things I love about the QIAD methods is that IF I need to square my blocks at all, it's usually just a small sliver. Very little fabric is wasted in trimming. Cutting carefully, sticking to a consistent seam allowance, and following the directions the QIAD way means your blocks come out even. I have done quilts with other patterns but still think the QIAD patterns are the best available.
