t-shirt quilts

Post by okie-quilter » Thu May 14, 2009 7:06 pm

has anyone out there made a t-shirt quilt? I have a friend that wants me to make one for her. I'm not sure that I want to make one.
I have read a few articles about them and I think I would have to be sure to get a very good fusible interfacing.
Thanks for any advice.

Another Okla quilter...yay!! I want to make a t-shirt quilt too but haven't done much research on how to do it. Just know you have to use fusible. Love to see if anyone else out there has a good technique.

JC and Maggie, QIAD has a pattern/instruction booklet for a t-shirt quilt. I don't know about anyone else, but for me, I have been so spoiled by the thorough instructions from QIAD publications, I will often hesitate to purchase or use any other patterns. They just aren't of the same caliber.

(No, I don't work for Quilt In A Day...but I would...what a dream of a job!)

Hi Okie!

I made a t-shirt quilt for my DH. You can read about how I did it at this link:

Evie...thank you for the link!! Great info and not nearly as scary as I thought it would (should) be.

Thanks so much for the info and the links. I will put these "helps" on my list for future references. Maybe this fall I will try one. I
am sure enjoying this forum. It is nice to read everyones notes. It's like meeting new friends from all over the country. The quilt pictures are great. I love to see quilts.
Our quilting guild finished a challenge last month. We were given a pattern for a small quilt with bunnies and chicks on it two months ago and challenged to make one for last months meeting.
we had 9 quilts made. It was really neat to see everyones finished quilt. They were all so different but all were very pretty.
must go. Our granddaughter graduated from college this am and our daughter is having a picnic party for her. Grilled foods and all the trimmings. yum, yum.
Thanks again. Jc

I made a Tshirt quilt and it turned out wonderfully! I used fusible interfacing from Walmart, just a light weight is fine. I used a damp presser cloth to press the two together with steam, or it wouldn't fuse well. Once they are pressed and fused, let them cool before handling. I used sashings to make my different sized blocks fit in rows and quilted it on my long arm machine. It's very heavy and thick to quilt, so I wouldn't want to try it by hand or small machine. Tying would work too. I made it for our daughter for Christmas last year and she loved it. Janie

Janie,
You said it was thick and heavey. Is this a T shirt or Sweat Shirt quilt. Tshirts are light but maybe with the interfacing it is heavy. If you did do a sweat shirt one, I would love to see it and learn how you did it. I have several sweat shirts stashed in my sewing room just waiting for me to get the nerve to cut into them.

Hi everyone! I've made 4 T-Shirt quilts and they are not hard. I used a knit-type woven interfacing (bought it at JoAnn's..what they recommended) and fused it to the back of the T-shirts.

All my t-shirts were different size squares so, like ilovetosew, I used sashing in different widths to get them set in a row.
They are heavy quilts...much like flannel and I hand quilted 3 of them. What a job and I don't recommend it to others! lol!
The last one I did was reversible..T-shirts on both sides and it was a bear to do that. But I machine quilted it and it wasn't hard.

They are neat looking quilts and really easier to do than pieced quilts. In fact, a T-Shirt quilt was my first full-size quilt that I made.

Good luck! Hope this helps.

THANK YOU !! I, too am attempting a t-shirt quilt for my niece. She's going to tie it when "we" get the top together. The fusible web discussion is great. I was wishy-washy between craft web or nonwoven for knits.
