How do you turn sharp points?

I'm making cute fabric wallets and placemats but I'm having trouble with the points. When I turn the item inside out, the points are big lumps, not square. I've tried cutting across the point at a 45 degree angle before turning, but I'm not happy with the result.

How do YOU make good points?

If there is batting in the corner - I trim it out and grade the seam allowance so the shortest edges will be in the back Also you might try removing the batting in the seam allowance around the entire edge as well. I have a point turner tool - a plastic tip that pokes out my corners very nicely. I found this tool many years ago, but have seen the on the notions wall at Jo Annn's. It is in a triangle shape with a point on one end and round on the other. Sometimes using a pin to pull gently out the corner works too. Just thought-- that the point on the end of a pair of knitting needles could work too

A chopstick with a fine point works well, too...be gentle...speaking as one who has torn though corners in the past...

If there is no batting in the item, instead of stitching to the corner and turning the material 90 degrees (right angle) and stitching, stop 1 stitch short of the corner, and take a stitch diagonially across to the other seam. Then trim the corner.

I also use smaller crochet hooks to poke out my corners. They tend to be pointy yet a little more rounded. I also cut mine, not only diagonally across the corner, but then snip another little "triangle" from each side leading up to the diagonal cut.

I agree with Knitnoid. Just do one diagonal stitch across the 'corner' and then trim like racnquilter. Makes nice sharp points everytime.
