How to decide the size of half and quarter square triangles

Long time ago, when I learned to do half and quarter square triangles there was a formula used to cut your fabric so you could sew the triangles and then square it up with very little waste of fabric but you could get a bunch of exact size triangles....

Can you tell me what the formula is?

My GF and I are running away from home ( no hubbies) for the weekend to have our own little retreat. We are meeting at a hotel with sewing machine, quilting equipment at a little B&B that accommodates quilters. It is located equal distant from our homes.

I am posting this in hopes I when I get to the B&B the answer will be here... I tried looking it up in my books but I did not find the answer AND I AM OUT OF TIME... it is time to leave.

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

ANNA from snowing again MI

That's the method I use too but I make it a full 1" instead of 7/8" for the HST. I'd rather trim a bit off than be too short.

Anna, I loved it when the family would head out for a long week-end or DH would go to a symposium...I'd take my machine and be happy as a clam staying in the hotel room sewing all day long. I know you and your friend will have a fun time!
