Quilt in a Day Forums

I need something to do at night.....I don't have any handquilting to do right now. I am thinking of making a child's redwork quilt. Is there a high-quality embroidery thread I should use? It seems like some of the cheaper thread I have used in the past tends to split and tangle etc.
If I am going to go through a lot of hand-work on this I would like it to last! Thanks for any suggestions. Please let me know how many threads to use too if it is one that has multiple ply. Hope this makes sense.

I always use DMC embroidery thread in all my work.Two or three strands work well.The two of course will be smaller and more daiety work than three but most work I do says use 3 strands.YOu can try them and see which you like better.I usually buy my thread at Wal-Mart but you can order it from Herrsherners by the box.Their's is real good also. The tangling might be caused by not seperating your strands before you put them in your needle.Just seperate your strands then smooth them back together before threading the needle,this also helps make your stitching to stand out better.

Another DMC fan here. Great quality.

When you cut the length of floss, no more than 18 inches, flick each end and the end that separates the strands the best is the end you pull the thread from. You will see a difference in each end. It will not tangle or knot up if pulled from the right end. It works. I learned this from a cross stitch design tester from Leisure Arts.

I use DMC also. but I use a thread conditions with it. Never have a problem. I think I use 498 for the color red to make it look antique looking. Geri

Here is another tip I learned from Alex Anderson's show.It might not work with embroidery thread but really works with regular sewing thread. For easy needle threading cut your thread on the slant instead of straight across and it will go into the needle the first try.This works for hand needles or machine. You probably already knew this but just thought I would remind you. The slant cut keeps the fibers from being bushy on the end and stays together better so they will go into the needle eye much easier.

Well duh I never thought about cutting my thread on a slant. It sure would make it easier to thread through a needle. I just think I am goofy sometimes. That is why I need this forum to give me wonderful ideas.
