Can anyone tell me if there is a cheat sheet (or maybe you know the rules) for making snowball blocks. I'm trying to figure out what size corner squares you need for different size center blocks. I know if you have a 4 1/2 inch center block you use 1 1/2 corner blocks (found that in a pattern). But what is the rule for adjusting to different size center squares. Thanks.

If you are doing blocks that aren't too small, you can sew a line half an inch away from the first stitching toward the corner. Then trim between the two lines of stitching. Then you will have a half square triangle block that is ready to be squared up for another project and you will not have to handle small triangles. I did this two years ago with Indian Hatchet blocks, which are like Snowball blocks with only 2 triangles on opposite corners. I planned the size so I could make two quilts with the same colors.
Here is the previous link.

Thanks for the link, mequilter. That will come in handy.
Kathy, I used this tip before (sewing 1/2" away from the stitching line) and it worked great! The hardest part for me to remember is sewing 1/2" away-I have a tendency to sew 1/4" away and have to rip out threads. LOL

Thanks Kathy! I am going to do that. Someone reminded me recently that scraps are $9/yd too (duh!) and I'm trying to be better about using them up.
